Stretching Loops – Exploring interactive textiles expressing Imitation for recording and replaying interactions

ABSTRACT
This paper presents Stretching Loops – design examples of sensing and reactive knitted textiles able to record and replay human interaction. Placed in a room, textile tubes imitate interactions performed by a human through motor control. As an example of basic research in the context of textile interaction design research, Stretching Loops is part of a series of experiments exploring various interactive textile expressions. Stretching Loops serve as an example of exploring design variables related to different expressions of Imitation. As examples of motor controlled textiles, Stretching Loops are to be seen as material for further design. References from the area of recording music are discussed and put in the context of kinetic textiles as a method for inspiration for developing the design examples.
