Work Shop – embedding electronics into textile garments

• Thursday the 3 of February 2011, between 08.30 – 16.00

• Espira Tillväxtcenter i Borås, Olovsholmsgatan 32

• Your own laptop is required

1scale1 will guide you through this one day event where you will be introduced to various ways of embedding electronics into textile garments and products.

There will be practical sessions where the participants will get the chance to learn about ways to quickly create sensors on textiles. Furthermore how to connect them to computers and send the information to other devices such as cellphones or via the internet to a remote location.

For the practical sessions you will need to bring a laptop. We will provide you with the software, hardware, conductive fabrics and threads, as well as tools. You don’t need any previous experience from programming, electronics or textiles to attend the practical session. We will show you that it is easy to get started prototyping interactive applications on garments. We hope this will help you envision new uses of this promising technology.

We also present physical demonstrators from 1scale1, Bioservo, FOV, Smart Textiles, University of Borås and SP.

The workshop is for those that work as product developers within the textile area, who work within the electronic field and want to expand into textile application, or those who are curious of how to get new functionalities into textiles.

The workshop will be held in English.

Program

08.30 -09.00 Registration with coffee
09.00 – 09.40 Introduction – Smart Textiles and 1sacel1
09.40 – 11.45 Practice session: Quick prototyping (Coffee Break included)

In this session you will get a hand-on-experience from using conductive textiles. You will learn the properties of different conductive textiles and how to use them to create soft inputs into garments, controlling for example light and sound.

11.45 – 12.45 Lunch and Mingle
12.45 – 13.45 Demonstrations

Some examples: 1scale1 will demonstrate a system involving smart phones, sensors and haptic outputs. Researchers within Smart Textile in Medical TexTile ElecTronics (MT3) from the University in Borås will demonstrate sensors for medical measurements. Bisoservo will demonstrate their Soft Extra Muscle Glove.

13.45 – 15.45 Practice session: Learn Soft Wear (Coffee Break included)

In this session you will experience hands on how to program and construct wearable products using hardware. You will be introduced to the basics of programming and electronics. This will enable you to get a feeling for how to design with these materials and new innovative ways to incorporate them into products. Your own computer isrequired.

15.45 – 16.00 Conclusion
